Article 128: Navigating Social Media In Divisive Times

The world appears to be so divided. Every person has their own opinion and believes it is correct. When a person offers a conflicting opinion, there’s no acceptance. But how did we get here? Let’s look at the role social media has played.

When you look at a video or article online, that social media platform builds a file on you. The platform is trying to find out your preferences so that they can give you more content that is similar to this. In this way, you spend more time on their platform, they can send you more advertisements and they make money, while you enjoy the content you see. It’s symbiotic. However the content they send is based on your own beliefs. It strengthens your stance on certain subjects. They don’t send you opposing content because they want you to stay and engage on their platform. This leads to someone believing that their perspective is the only one, which leads to divided, heated debates.

Leaders and entrepreneurs challenge their own perspectives, in business and life by looking at opposing points of view. There is danger in living in a vacuum and this is true of a company. Rebel entrepreneurs are cautious of only hearing a singular story. As they push towards progress, they challenge themselves and their own beliefs.
