Article 112: Anxiety hates routine

Anxiety

In recent times, anxiety has become an epidemic. According to the World Health Organization, 300 million people around the world suffer from anxiety and the numbers are on the rise. As it stands, anxiety disorder is the most common mental illness in the US.

Everyone feels anxious from time to time, but if there’s one thing that anxiety can’t stand, it’s routine. This is especially true for rebel entrepreneurs. Having a defined routine – whether it’s going to the gym before work or getting up at the same time every morning – can go a long way in quieting feelings of anxiety. Routine offers stability and a small sense of predictability in a largely uncertain environment. When a number of elements of our lives feel out of control, it helps to know that there are some factors that we can control – even if it’s as simple as a set morning workout.

It’s no surprise that many entrepreneurs cite their routine as an essential part of their approach to life and business. Tim Ferriss’ morning consists of meditation, drinking tea, journalling and exercise, but the most important thing he does each morning is make his bed. Ferriss claims that no matter what the day throws at him, he will have completed that first simple task, which he believes gives him enough positive momentum to tackle whatever lies ahead.

The sense of control that comes with routine is paramount in tackling anxiety, but the benefits of routine do not end there. Routines foster good habits. They work to keep us healthy and, ultimately, they give us a framework that brings us closer to achieving our goals.
